Epidemiological Study of Renal Tuberculosis for 10 Years


Abstract
Renal tuberculosis is known to be an infectious disease secondary to lesions of pulmonary and other organs. The incidence of renal tuberculosis has declined since advent of modern antituberculosis chemotherapy.
Epidemiological study was performed on renal tuberculosis of the inpatients in every univer-sity hospital in Korea for the past 10 years (19651974). Comparative study was made, divid-ing Korea into three parts Ki-Ho, Young-Nam, and Ho-Nam.
Results are as follows:
1. During the period, among 8423 cases hospitalized in urologic department, 541 cases (6.4 %) were found to be renal tuberculosis.
In Ki-Ho, of 5306 cases hospitalized, 331 cases (6.210o) had renal tuberculosis. In Young-Nam, of 2274 cases hospitalized, 153 cases (6.7%) had renal tuberculosis. In Ho-Nam, of 843 cases hospitalized, 57 cases (6. 8%) had renal tuberculosis.
2. Age.&- sex distribution showed that 173 cases (32.0%) were in 31^40 years, 160 cases (29.6%) in 21^¢¥30 years.
Regarding the sex, 295 cases (54.5%) were male and 246 cases (45.5%) were female.
3. Symptom duration before admission showed as follows.
In Ki-Ho, 127 cases (38.4%) were within 6 months, 28 cases (18.3¡Æ0¢¥) were over 2 years. In Young-Nam, 63 cases (41.2%) within 6 months, 28 cases (18.3%) over 2 years. In Ho-Nam, 13 cases (22.8%) within.6 month, 25 cases (44.9%) over 2 years.
4. Initial symptom was mostly those of vesical symptoms and hematuria. Frequency in 31.6%, hematuria in 26.9%.
5. Difference in number of admitted cases between the urban and rural area showed as follows. In Ki-Ho, 223 cases in the urban area, 108 cases in the rural area. In Young-Nam, 79 cases in the urban area, 74 cases in. the rural area. In Ho-Nam, 17 cases in the urban area,
40 cases in the rural area.
6. Sex distribution between the urban and rural area showed as follows. In the urban area, 175 cases were male and 114 cases were female. In the rural area, 120 cases were male and 102 cases were female. In the urban area of Ki-Ho, 116 cases were male and 107 cases were female. In the rural area, 54 cases were male and 54 cases were female. In the urban area of Young-Nam, 51 cases were male and 28 cases were female. In the rural area, 44 cases were male and 30 cases were female. In the urban area of Ho-Nam, 8 cases were male and 9 cases were female. In the rural area, 22 cases were male and 18 cases were female.
7. Other tuberculous lesions were found in 293 cases (54.2%), of which 53.9% had pulmo- nary tuberculosis, 25.3% epididymitis, 13.3% pleurisy, 3.4% bony tuberculosis, 1.4% tubercu-lous lymphadenitis.
